On 10 Feb 2026, a group of 18 volunteers gathered at Pantai Bari in Setiu, Terengganu for a meaningful beach clean up initiative.
The effort brought together the Katsetiu team, environmental group Geng Plastik Ija (GPI), and members of the local community.
The objective was simple: protect our coastline and raise awareness about marine pollution in Terengganu.
The Growing Problem of Ocean Waste
One of the most concerning observations during the clean up was the large amount of plastic waste washed ashore.
Pantai Bari, like many coastal areas in Malaysia, is particularly affected during the monsoon season when strong currents carry marine debris across borders.
Much of the waste found along the beach is believed to have drifted from neighbouring countries, highlighting the global nature of ocean pollution. Plastic waste does not recognize borders, and coastal communities often become the final resting place for debris traveling thousands of kilometres through the sea.
This growing issue threatens marine ecosystems, wildlife, and the natural beauty of Malaysia’s beaches. Items such as plastic bottles and fishing gear can take decades to break down, posing long term environmental risks.
150 Kilograms of Waste Collected
In just two hours, the volunteers collected an alarming 150 kilograms of waste. The debris ranged from plastic bottles and food packaging to damaged fishing gear and other equipment that had accumulated along the shoreline .
The clean up effort was also supported by Majlis Daerah Setiu (MDS), whose appointed cleaning contractor helped manage the collected waste and ensured it was transported to the local waste disposal site.
More Than Just a Beach Clean Up
Beach clean ups like the one held at Pantai Bari are not only about removing waste from the shoreline. They also play an important role in raising awareness about marine pollution and encouraging responsible environmental habits.
Events like this help build a stronger sense of community by bringing together people from different backgrounds who care about the same cause.
When volunteers work side by side, the clean up becomes more than just an environmental activity. It becomes a social gathering where friendships are formed and shared values are strengthened.
By turning beach clean ups into community driven initiatives, local groups can inspire more people to take action and protect the oceans for future generations.
Protecting Terengganu’s Natural Beauty
Terengganu is known for its pristine beaches, mangrove ecosystems, and the unique Setiu Wetlands. Protecting these natural environments requires continuous effort from both the community and visitors.
Regular beach clean ups help preserve the beauty of Pantai Bari while also reminding everyone of the importance of responsible waste management and environmental stewardship.
The ocean connects us all. By caring for our beaches today, we help ensure that future generations will continue to enjoy the same clean shores and healthy marine ecosystems.
Community Collaboration Makes a Difference
The success of the Pantai Bari beach clean up would not have been possible without the collaboration between several dedicated groups and individuals. The Katsetiu team worked alongside Geng Plastik Ija (GPI), the local community, and Majlis Daerah Setiu (MDS) to ensure the event ran smoothly.
Their teamwork and shared effort demonstrate how small groups of people can create a meaningful impact when they come together for a common goal.
Sustainability at the Heart of Katsetiu Villas
At Katsetiu Villas, sustainability is not a trend. It is part of how we operate and design our space. From encouraging responsible tourism to supporting local environmental initiatives, we believe that hospitality and environmental responsibility should go hand in hand.
As a beachfront homestay in Setiu, protecting the coastline is not optional, it is a responsibility.
This beach clean up reflects our ongoing commitment to preserving Terengganu’s natural beauty for future generations.
