Terengganu has been always my top choice for a peaceful staycation, a place to unwind from the busy city life – a place for healing, as Malaysians love to say. Truthfully, this coastal state has the longest coastal area in Malaysia, spanning more than 200km facing the South China Sea and home to some of Malaysia’s most beautiful islands (eg: Redang Island and Perhentian Island), surpassing even the best of Tioman or Langkawi Island.
Nestled in the tranquil landscapes of Terengganu about 40km up north of Kuala Terengganu airport, Katsetiu Villas is a hidden vacation rental home that has been my perfect family retreat. It was and still in our top list of places to visit everyt ime I head to Terengganu.
Our family was on a healing staycation, looking to unwind and reconnect, and we couldn’t have chosen a better homestay in Terengganu.
Yes, there are plenty of affordable vacation rental homes in Terengganu, as a frequent traveler to Malaysia’s islands, we are looking for something a bit more modern, chic, clean and has that urban vibe to it.
Lets be honest, at RM 150 ($ 40) per person per night, this could be easily the best luxury resort-like vacation rental experience you could find in Terengganu with direct beach facing studio and family-sized villas that can easily accommodate up to 27 pax.
We found this amazing homestay beach villa on social media by pure sheer luck, possibly a hidden gem amongst domestic travellers too, making a perfect quiet place in Terengganu to detox, unwind, relax and heal. And not to mention it is near to Redang Island with a 50-minute boat trip that departs almost hourly from its nearest jetty located at Merang.
From the moment we arrived, the villa radiated a sense of peace that soothed our tired souls, and for anyone needing a break from the city’s pace, it’s truly a sanctuary retreat worth discovering.
For first time traveler to Terengganu, don’t let the sleepy town scare you. It is almost like turning back time back to the 70s with less cars, quiet streets surrounded by friendly local people.
The surroundings offered a serene ambiance—immense open skies, lush plants fields, and views of both the calm South China Sea and rolling hills, creating a perfect backdrop for relaxation. No vehicles or people spotted in the area. Just perfect.
The plus point is that this private luxury vacation villa is located an hour’s drive distance away from Kuala Terengganu and close to the Merang Jetty, making it an ideal destination for both relaxation, healing and a exploration. So technically, it is far better to drive from Kuala Lumpur to Terengganu to explore the wide highways and inner roads before arriving to this little hidden gem along a quiet beach stretch.
Katsetiu is indeed a splendid weekend vacation rental place for those who don’t like touristy busy places, or those who just wanna chill and call it a home. Not many accommodations in Terengganu can cater to our taste and penchant for the luxury touch of a modern resort, but this private villa seemed to fulfill our desire to rent it over the weekend.
Tranquility at Its Finest
We were greated with a taste of modern simplicity with its dark grey boxy architecture, reminding of the American 60’s design language, where modern minimalism meets luxury with a hint of traditional cues of the Malaysian village homestay. Whilst it is all concrete, there are small touches of wood and faux wall paints with nice modern kitchen, and not to mention clean modern bathroom with outdoor shower too!
From our villa’s balcony, the view of Redang Island was breathtaking, with the gentle sea breeze and endless stretches of lush greenery. The pine trees provided the shades and vibes of a tranquil beach lifestyle. Yes the beach is just 50m away from the villa, and you can literally walk 20 steps barefooted to the beach with ease.
The peaceful environment around the Chalok Beach made it easy to leave the stress of daily life behind. Each morning, we woke up to the serene sounds of nature, a world away from city noise.
On day two, we took a short drive to Penarik Beach too (about 10 mins), where the white sands and gentle waves were just what we needed to feel refreshed.
These coastal Terengganu beaches are stunningly pristine and uncrowded, letting us enjoy the seaside at our own pace. The kids loved building sandcastles, while we adults soaked in the sun and the calming rhythm of the waves.
Minimalist Modern Chic

The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the staff at Katsetiu Villas. Each team member seemed genuinely dedicated to making our stay as comfortable as possible.
Their warmth and attention to detail reminded me of Terengganu’s unique charm—the hospitality here is unlike anywhere else. The villa had everything we needed, and whenever we had a request, it was met with a friendly smile and quick service.
As for the food, we had the opportunity to taste the famous Terengganu dish nasi dagang, prepared traditionally with fragrant rice, rich fish curry, and pickled vegetables. The flavors were an unforgettable part of our stay, and even our picky eaters loved every bite. The villa’s arrangement with local eateries allowed us to sample Terengganu’s authentic flavors, adding a unique culinary touch to our vacation.
A Staycation Worth Every Moment
Our few days at Katsetiu Villas was filled with moments of joy, relaxation, and connection—both with nature and with each other. I keep reminding myself, this is the perfect place to stay for healing, staycation or even a short vacation to Terengganu. It was a worthwhile trip (and enduring a 6-hour drive) to Terengganu, but we strongly suggest to take an hour flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu before renting a car to drive to this amazing homestay place.
Tranquility and peach may not be for everyone, but this staycation healing experience is more than just a stay; it’s a restorative journey for me and the family.
