In a recent trip to Terengganu, an American traveller Terry Pernell decided to spend more time to explore the hidden gems of Malaysia’s popular beach destination. This time he decided to stay at Katsetiu Villas and this his honest review after staying 3 nights with us.
Terry received the attention of many Malaysians after recognizing the country as “Wakanda”, capturing the hearts of many Malaysians with his genuine admiration and honesty as he travels extensively to the nook and crannies of the country.
From viral moments at roadside R&R stops to raw reflections on Malaysian culture, he reminds us of the everyday magic (and underappreciated gems) that we often overlook.
“When I first got to Malaysia, I was hyped! I was like, Malaysia is the best country in Southeast Asia.”
In October, his journey brought him to Terengganu for the 2nd time, where he and his partner, Magda stayed at Katsetiu Villas. Beyond the magnificent Redang Islands, he discovered a slice of Malaysia’s east coast that feels untouched, authentic, and deeply serene -the perfect Terengganu beach stay for travellers, family and even divers.
Inside Katsetiu Villas: Spacious Living, Full Amenities with Pool
In this Katsetiu Villas review, Terry shared a walkthrough tour of their Main Villa, showcasing a blend of modern luxury and local charm. The villa features 3 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a spacious living area, and a fully equipped modern kitchen, comfortably accommodating up to 9 guests.
Designed with relaxation and a connection to nature in mind, each villa offers front-door sunrise views, along with a secluded garden and a pool, where guests can take a refreshing dip while surrounded by lush greenery.
And this was his first impression.
“It’s like a maze! This place is so luxurious,” Terry remarked as he was walking through the spacious 3 bedrooms, mesmerized by the huge living space of the main villa.
He felt the interior and layout are super spacious yet uncluttered, creating an atmosphere that encourages stillness and comfort, making it one of the most family-friendly villas in Terengganu.

From the villa’s balcony, guests can enjoy breathtaking views of Redang Island across the South China Sea, the kind of scenery you’d expect from a private island, yet easily accessible on the mainland.
Although Terry missed the opportunity to visit Redang Island as the monsoon season was approaching, he was hopeful to visit the island when he returns to Terengganu in the near future. He was keen to experience the island up close especially since Katsetiu Villas offers affordable Snorkeling Packages with prices starting at RM 100 per person.
But Terry’s short stay in Katsetiu was a perfect getaway to unwind from his busy travel schedule. According to him this place is so peaceful and gave him a sense of positive energy to recharge and to think clearly.
“This place has a relaxing and chill-out vibe at the same time. It helped me to reflect on some of my thoughts, my travel journey and what future holds for me. Magda was enjoying her work at various areas of the villa too due to the spacious design layout.”
“If you’re wondering where to stay near Redang Island, this Katsetiu makes an ideal base due to short distance to the Merang Jetty” said Yuva, the guest experience manager of Katsetiu.
“For future travelers that are planning to explore Redang Island, keep in mind that snorkeling season typically runs from March to October, with the best time to go between May and August when the sea is calm and crystal clear.” said Saifuddin who runs the daily operations at Katsetiu.
He added it is best to avoid travelling to Terengganu in November to January, as the monsoon season brings strong waves and unpredictable weather. However, there are still guests staying at Katsetiu as it is amongst the few places or homestay in Terengganu that are not affected by flood during the monsoon season.
“Katsetiu is amongst few places or homestays in Terengganu that is open during monsoon season and guests can stay safely swim in our pool” said Yuva. However, she warned that swimming at the beach is strictly prohibited during monsoon due to strong wave and safety reasons.
For those craving a peaceful luxury escape and have always seen those beachfront luxury villas on the ‘gram but assumed you’d need to be filthy rich to afford it, think again. Especially couple seeking privacy, Katsetiu Villas also offers a 1-bedroom villa, ideal for honeymoons, anniversaries, or quiet getaways.
All villas at Katsetiu are equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi, smart TVs, and on-site parking. Whether you’re planning a group holiday or a peaceful couple’s retreat, every villa is thoughtfully designed for comfort, space, and convenience.
And that’s the reason Terry loved this place.
“Anything you want is here.” Terry added.
Terry’s lighthearted remarks about pronouncing “Katsetiu”, sparked a flurry of comments on his video, which has since garnered nearly to 35,000 views and over 100 comments.
One commenter wrote that they had previously stayed at the villas and had an amazing experience. And this was backed hundreds of positive reviews we found on Google reviews about Katsetiu Villas, making it one of the top places to stay in Terengganu.
Another commentor noted that Terry’s walkthrough convinced them to book a stay after seeing the beauty of the place through his lens.
Nature and Adventure in Setiu
Beyond the villa itself, there is so much to see, taste and explore.
Just a few steps away lies one of Terengganu’s most important conservation efforts, the WWF Turtle Sanctuary, an important project dedicated to protecting endangered sea turtles. The hatchery plays a crucial role in preserving these majestic creatures, and its proximity to the villa makes it an unforgettable stop for guests who appreciate nature and wildlife.
Setiu is one of those rare places that makes you want to put down your phone and just bask in the view (after taking a few hundred photos first, of course).
In the evenings, Terry and Mag enjoyed peaceful rides along the beach and quiet village roads, soaking in the slow rhythm of life in Setiu. In fact hiking to Ulu Kasar to view the magical blue lagoon and Setiu Wetlands are amongst the top things you can do in Setiu, a district in Terengganu that are often visited by travellers and tourists.
Guests at Katsetiu Villas can also enjoy complimentary bicycles, perfect for exploring the scenic roads or catching the golden glow of sunset along the beach of Terengganu.
They also had the chance to embrace the natural beauty of Terengganu by hiking to Ulu Kasar, a hidden waterfall that known for its untouched rainforest surroundings and serene atmosphere. Framed by a lush greenery and the sound of cascading water, it’s the perfect place for a refreshing swim after a rewarding hike.
@terrypernell Terengganu got some of the most underrated nature spots in Malaysia 😤🌊 From Lata Ulu Kasar to Lata Papan, this trail gave pure healing vibes. 2.7km of jungle, laughs, and waterfalls that made every step worth it. Between the turtle sanctuary, the peaceful beaches, and the nearby waterfall hikes, there’s no shortage of things to do in Setiu for those who love nature and discovery.
In one of his videos, Terry wrote:
“To disappear into the green, chase waterfalls that don’t exist on maps, breathe with the forest, laugh like kids again and come back softer, freer and filled with the kind if peace only nature can give.”
He’s not wrong.
Imagine taking a break from the chaos of city life, no deadlines, no noise, no endless scrolling. Just the sound of waves, the whisper of wind through the trees, and the warmth of sunlight on your skin. Terengganu offers the kind of peace that feels rare in today’s world, a place where nature invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and take in the moment.
The People and the Pace
What stood out most to Terry wasn’t just the scenery, but the people. The hospitality at Katsetiu Villas mirrors the warmth of Terengganu itself, friendly, genuine, and rooted in community.
“Terengganu people are extremely relaxed.” Terry stated while enjoying a BBQ night by the pool. “The hospitality is very high here.”, he added.
Guests who enjoy outdoor dining can rent BBQ equipment, complete with charcoal and all the essentials. Or, if you’d rather not cook, Katsetiu Villas also offers a Private BBQ Dinner where everything is prepared for you, all you have to do is relax and enjoy the food (just don’t eat inside the pool though!).
From the villa staff to the locals around Setiu, everyone exuded an easy kindness that made the experience feel personal. For a traveller used to constant motion like him, the slow pace of Terengganu was a refreshing reminder of why travel matters, to pause, to connect, and to truly see.
“How do I compare it to Bali? It’s like a real vacation, a real holiday.” he quipped.
Forget expensive Phuket or Bali trips that will cost your entire month’s salary (if not more), and set aside the idea that you have to travel far away for a private romantic getaway. Katsetiu Villas has everything you need, right here in Terengganu.
And for those thinking of staying at Katsetiu Villas, Terry had one simple piece of advice:
“Enjoy your time here, you won’t regret it!” he concluded.
For most travellers to Terengganu, a stay at Katsetiu Villas is more than a getaway, it’s a feeling you’ll carry with you, long after the waves fade. Whether you’re a family traveler, a couple on a romantic escape, or a digital nomad craving a Terengganu beach stay, this place delivers peace, beauty, and connection.
It’s no wonder Katsetiu Villas is recognized among the best private homestay / vacation beach villas on Malaysia’s east coast, an inviting blend of luxury and local soul that makes it one of the top hidden gems in Terengganu.
