Best Destinations in Malaysia for Christmas Holidays

There is a particular kind of Christmas that only works when everyone is under one roof: cousins sharing a room, an uncle in charge of the barbecue, and a long table that takes most of the afternoon to clear. Hotels are not built for that, but a good group house is.

With schools closed from early December until 31 December 2026 and Christmas Day falling on a Friday, this is a good year to try it. I went through listings and recent guest reviews in five states and narrowed them down to two large-group stays in each. For every one I have set out what it offers, what guests say about it, and why I think it suits a Christmas gathering in particular. Ratings are as I found them in early October 2026.

Terengganu

Terengganu is the contrarian choice. This is the east coast's off-season, so nobody comes for island-hopping, and that is the point: the coast goes quiet, rates come down, and a big family can have a long stretch of beach almost to itself.

The Estate Setiu

The Estate Setiu is a private beachside house in Permaisuri with seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, 16 beds and its own pool, taking 16 or more guests. It is a newer property with a 5.0 rating on Airbnb from a small number of early reviews.

Its appeal at Christmas is seclusion. This is a house for a family that wants to cook together, swim between showers and see no one else all week. Because the review record is still short, I would ask the host two things before booking: whether the house stays open through the monsoon, and what the cancellation terms are if the weather turns.

Katsetiu Villas

On the same stretch of coast, Katsetiu Villas takes a different approach. Instead of one big house it is a four-villa beachfront estate on an acre of land at Pantai Bari, about 36 km from Kuala Terengganu, with a three-bedroom main villa, three one-bedroom villas and a shared pool. Book all four and the whole estate is yours, for up to 20 guests.

That arrangement works well at Christmas, because couples and grandparents get their own villa while everyone gathers in the main villa's open-plan living area for meals. December and January are also the property's off-peak months, when the whole-estate rate drops to RM3,000 per night, or RM150 per person, with breakfast and extra beds included. Staff can arrange a private barbecue dinner on request, which is one way to settle Christmas Eve.

It helps to know what the season brings: December is monsoon season on the east coast. Island boats to Redang and Lang Tengah pause until the weather settles, the sea is for watching rather than swimming, and some days bring heavy rain, often with clearer spells in the morning. The property stays open through the season, and its beachfront location is outside the district's flood-prone areas. The pool stays in use throughout, so there is always somewhere to swim.

What guests describe, though, is exactly what a quiet Christmas needs. Reviews on the property's website mention a clean, uncrowded beach, nasi dagang at breakfast and staff who organised hiking and waterfall trips, and one travel blogger who stayed a single night wrote that it was too short. Setiu has no public Christmas events, so the celebration is whatever your family brings to it. If that means a long lunch with rain on the roof and nobody else around, this is the place; if it means snorkelling, come back between March and October.

Pahang

If your picture of Christmas involves a jumper and a hot drink, Pahang's hills are the closest Malaysia gets. Both of my picks sit at altitude, one deep in Cameron Highlands and the other in Janda Baik, just 45 minutes from Kuala Lumpur.

Rose Hill Gardens, Cameron Highlands

Rose Hill Gardens is a 4,700 sq ft semi-detached house in Golden Hills, the estate between Tanah Rata and Brinchang that grew up around the night market. It sleeps 18 across six queen beds and three bunk beds, and the host will consider larger groups at RM100 per extra person per night. Guests rate it 4.84 on Airbnb from more than 40 reviews, and I like that the bed count actually matches the headcount.

What makes it a Christmas house is the weather. With daytime temperatures of 16 to 24 degrees, a steamboat dinner feels right rather than sweaty, and the night market is close enough to walk to for strawberries afterwards.

DatzVilla, Janda Baik

Where Cameron asks for a long drive, DatzVilla asks for almost none, which suits families who only have the three-day weekend. It is a private compound with a pool, a garden, karaoke and a barbecue area, and one reviewer describes a main house with three en-suite rooms plus two smaller houses with two rooms each.

That layout is a gift at Christmas, because each branch of the family gets its own front door and everyone still meets at the pool. The reviews are the best I read anywhere: 4.96 out of 5 on Airbnb from 23 stays, including groups of 20 and 30, one of whom thanks the caretaker by name. Genting, which ran a free Winter Wonderland with artificial snowfall last December, is a short drive uphill.

Melaka

No state does Christmas quite like Melaka. In the Portuguese Settlement at Ujong Pasir, families of Portuguese-Eurasian descent decorate their homes and the village square every December, and by Christmas Eve the lanes are full of lights, carollers and visitors. Both houses below are near Jonker Street, a short drive away.

Villa D'Amour @ Jonker

Villa D'Amour is a three-storey semi-detached villa about 1 km from Jonker Street, listed for 24 guests, with eight bedrooms, a pool and a karaoke room. Almost every bedroom has its own bathroom, and once a group passes 15 people that matters more than any other feature. It is a fairly new listing, and its Airbnb score was a full 5.0 from a little over 20 reviews when I checked.

Its Christmas advantage is the host's willingness to discuss catering and event set-ups. A sit-down dinner for 24 is a serious undertaking, and handing the buffet to someone else means the cooks in the family get a holiday too.

Villa by OldMan

A minute from Jonker Street, Villa by OldMan is a five-bedroom, five-bathroom house with a pool, karaoke, a pool table and a barbecue area. Its Airbnb rating of around 4.93 from roughly 70 reviews is a long and consistent record for a group house.

For Christmas I like it because nobody needs to drive. The old town, its historic churches and the weekend night market are all within walking distance, and the mahjong set and board games will keep three generations busy after dinner. My one reservation is capacity: the listing title says 20 guests but at least one booking site shows 16, so ask for the exact bed layout before committing a large group.

Penang

Penang suits the family that cannot agree on what a holiday is for. The beach people get Batu Ferringhi, the food people get George Town, and because December is one of the drier months on this coast, both camps can usually have their way.

Ocean 23, Shamrock Beach

Ocean 23 is a seven-bedroom villa run by Penang Island Lodge, three minutes on foot from Shamrock Beach, with a private pool, a barbecue area and parking. It sleeps 30, and the operator is clear that all 30 get a proper bed, which I value because so many big listings quietly count floor mattresses. Guest comments published by the operator praise the cleanliness and the friendly owner.

This is the house for the full reunion, the Christmas when relatives from every state finally make it. The same company runs neighbouring villas, so a group that outgrows one house can spill into the next. Go in knowing the trade-offs, though: one of the seven bedrooms is an open hall screened by a curtain, and five bathrooms between 30 people will call for patience in the morning.

La Ferringhi Villa

La Ferringhi Villa is the calmer alternative, a tropical-themed corner bungalow with five bedrooms that takes up to 20 guests. It sits in a quiet residential pocket about five minutes' drive from the beach, the restaurants and the Batu Ferringhi night market, and holds a Booking.com score of 8.5 from 20 reviews.

I would choose it for a Christmas with grandparents and young children, when an early night matters as much as a late one. The night market is handy for last-minute presents. Do ask which unit you are getting, as the operator manages more than one bungalow under the name.

Kedah

For Kedah, read Langkawi. While the east coast sits in the middle of its monsoon, the island is sheltered and well into its dry season, which makes it one of the most dependable places in the country for a Christmas spent in swimwear.

Limasan Villa Langkawi

Limasan is a cluster of Javanese-style villas set among the paddy fields near Pantai Cenang. The largest, Bantul Villa, has five bedrooms, five bathrooms and a private pool, while smaller villas on the same site sleep eight or nine. Tripadvisor reviewers give it 5.0 from 19 reviews, and one party of four families with young children wrote that the pool, living area and kitchen covered everything they needed.

It is the most photogenic stay on this list, and Christmas is the one time of year when everyone wants the family photograph. The full kitchen makes a proper Christmas lunch possible, with Pantai Cenang a short drive away for sunset. Read the villa descriptions carefully, though, because a few Booking.com guests found their villa shared a pool or was not fully fenced.

Langkawi Cozy Holiday Home at Bukit Indah

If Limasan is the splurge, this is the sensible option. It is a group of holiday homes in Kuah managed by a host called Zervin, each taking 14 to 20 guests, and the largest has five bedrooms and 11 beds. It is not on the beach, but it carries a Booking.com score of 8.9 from 141 reviews, with cleanliness and value both rated above 9.

December is a costly month to travel, and that is exactly why I rate it for Christmas. A large family can keep the accommodation bill modest and put the difference towards an island-hopping trip, a seafood dinner and the duty-free shopping in Kuah, which happens to be on the doorstep.

How I would choose

If I were matching these to families, I would send those with small children to Janda Baik or Langkawi, the food-lovers to Penang, anyone who wants carols and lights to Melaka, and the group that simply wants to disappear for a few days to Setiu. Wherever you land, confirm the real number of beds and bathrooms before paying a deposit, and book early, because the houses that sleep twenty tend to go first.

Whichever house you choose, the formula is the same one it has always been: enough beds, one big table and the people you would rather not spend December without. Get those three right and the rest, whether it is highland mist, Melaka's lights or a quiet beach in Setiu, is simply the backdrop. Merry Christmas, and happy planning.
