3 Days 2 Nights Itinerary: Perfect for First-Time Visitors

If you have 3 days to spend in Terengganu, you can enjoy some of the pristine mainland beaches, a day trip to the nearby Redang Island, enjoy fresh seafood, local delicacies and immerse yourself to the cultural heritage before leaving Terengganu on an evening flight on the last day.

According to travelers on TripAdvisor, 3 days and 2 nights in Terengganu is the absolute minimum and it is highly recommended to spend longer days to get the most memorable experience as the state is blessed with nature that begs to be explored.   

Here is what you can do if you have three days in Terengganu.

Day 1: Beach Relaxation

Morning:

Pantai Chalok: Spend a night in Katsetiu Villas, located 36km from the airport and start your day with a relaxing morning at the iconic Pantai Chalok in Setiu district. Enjoy a quiet stroll and sunrise at about 6am. You can enjoy the quiet beach without the crowd after your breakfast. Enjoy a leisurely walk, run by the beach, catch a fish or enjoy a good morning swim after your breakfast or coffee. 

The best way to experience Terengganu is simply taking a dip or chilling out at the beach with your favourite coffee or food that you bought in the local shops. There are plenty to choose from if you are adventurous enough to explore the local delicacies. Ideally, you drive or own rent your own car from the Kuala Terengganu airport itself.

Total Time: 2-3 hours

Mid Morning / Afternoon:

Keluang Hill: Hike to one of Terengganu’s most scenic places with breathtaking views of South China Sea. However, you need to drive 56km (45 minutes) to Bukit Keluang from Setiu District. The hike to the top of Bukit Keluang is approximately 1.5km on way. Some sections of the trails are steep but assisted by ropes. Generally, the hike to Keluang Hill is relatively safe for newbies and healthy adults, and less crowded on weekdays. It is highly recommended to wear sports / outdoor attire, sports shoes and don’t forget to bring your own water (and food) as you may get thirsty later.

Head back to Katsetiu Villas for lunch after burning more than 600+ calories from the hike. Keluang Hill is popular amongst locals and travellers with average fitness level who don’t mind hiking up hills or mountains. This is an absolute a must-do activity when you are visiting Terengganu, especially if you are an outdoor person.

Best to bring your own drone to get the best view of Redang Island, Perhentian Island and the South China Sea, reminding you of the seven sisters in Australia (if you have visited one). Local transport is not available to Keluang Hill, so therefore it is advisable for first time travellers to rent their own car to drive to the spot through the quiet B roads from Setiu district to the location.

Evening:

Kampung Cina (Chinatown): As night falls, stroll through Chinatown, where vibrant street art and delicious local cuisines await. You may need to drive 80km from Setiu and this lively area is great for dining, having a good drink and photography.

If you are adventurous, travellers who enjoy food and local delicacies may enjoy the rustic charm of its cafes and immerse yourself with the Chinatown vibes in Terengganu. The minority of Chinese population do serve alcohol in Terengganu for those who enjoy drinking and perhaps you may stumble across divers and solo travellers in this small town of Terengganu.

Day 2: Island Adventure

Morning:

Redang Island: Take the first speedboat at 8am from Merang Jetty to Redang Island, one of Malaysia’s top spots for diving and snorkeling in Terengganu. Beach lovers and divers can explore the stunning coral reefs and swim in crystal-clear waters if they opt for a day snorkeling trip to Redang Island.

Snorkeling packages in Redang Island with a full day-trip boat ride, masks and lunch can be found as low as RM 99 per person for adults, and RM 80 for children. This snorkeling package is the lowest and the cheapest you could get in Terengganu if you are staying at Katsetiu Villas. The best place to stay for snorkelling or diving activities in Redang Island is at Katsetiu Villas as the Merang Jetty is 10 minutes away, located in the same Setiu District. It is safe to park your car overnight at Katsetiu Villas or at the Merang Jetty for those who rent a car.

Afternoon:

Redang Marine Park Centre: After snorkeling or diving, you may visit the Redang Marine Park Centre on the Redang Island itself to learn about the island’s rich marine biodiversity. There is a beach on the Marine Park and families can enjoy a glass-bottom boat tour if diving is not on the list. This visit is made possible if you take the private boat charter which will take you back to the mainland Terengganu at about 4pm.

The snorkeling adventure also includes trip to the Turtle Bay in Redang Island which is a the home to many friendly turtles. You may swim and feed the turtles in Redang Island, which is amongst the top attraction in Terengganu. This is why it attracts more traveler and divers compared to Langkawi Island.

Dinner By the Beach: End your day with a beachside BBQ dinner at Katsetiu Villas on the mainland Terengganu, or at one of the resorts on Redang Island, where fresh seafood is the highlight.

Terengganu State Museum: Before departing, visit the Terengganu State Museum, the largest museum in Southeast Asia, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region in 9 galleries. Located at Kuala Terengganu main district, the Terengganu Museum boasts unique and authentic Terengganu architectural language, spanning 75,000 square meters with four interconnected buildings, raised on concrete stilts above landscaped gardens and ponds. The entrance fee ticket is RM 5 (USD 1.40) for adult and RM 2 (USD 0.50) for children, and it opens Monday to Saturday.

Afternoon:

Local Craft Shopping at Pasar Payang: Before heading home of if you have the time (assuming you depart on the evening flight), stop by Pasar Payang to buy local crafts, including batik, songket, and handmade souvenirs. This local market sells cheap souvenirs that you can hand carry, especially if you are seeking for unique Terengganu gifts. The best hand-made songket and batik shirts are made in Terengganu, so its worth buying one as it gets pretty expensive if you are buying in Kuala Lumpur.

4 Days 3 Nights Itinerary: Extended Relaxation and Adventure

The best way to truly experience Terengganu is to spend a minimum of 4 days and 3 nights which takes you to the best tourist attractions in Terengganu – including island hopping in Redang or Perhentian and top coastal Terengganu beaches such as Pantai Chalok or Pantai Penarik – usually accompanied by local food, cafes or even turtle watching if you have more time.

 A four-day trip gives you a better taste to what Terengganu has to offer, and it may lead you to a longer slow-travel experience, particularly if you love diving, lazing around and other beach activities.

Here is what you can do if you have four days in Terengganu.

Day 1: Welcome to Terengganu

Morning:

Pantai Teluk Ketapang: If you arrive on an early flight to Terengganu, you may start with a relaxed morning at Pantai Teluk Ketapang which is located 5 minutes drive from the airport. It’s ideal for families and beachgoers, with shady picnic spots and water sports options like banana boat rides. Pantai Teluk Ketapang is a popular destination for the ICT (Ikan Celup Tepung) or fish fried in batter. ICT is quite a sought after, a local Terengganu fish snack eaten with a chili sauce, and locals flock here to also enjoy a nice view of the sea in the afternoon and dinner time.

Afternoon:

Terengganu Drawbridge: Drive and head to the Terengganu Drawbridge for a quick photo-op and enjoy its architecture. Then, spend time exploring the riverside area in the afternoon. Terengganu Drawbridge is located in the heart of Kuala Terengganu, 5 minutes away from the airport.

It is a good instagrammable spot in Terengganu. You may park your car in the designated area before walking to the bridge. That gives you plenty of time before you check in at the various hotels in Kuala Terengganu and explore some of the restaurants / cafes in the city during lunchtime.

Time: 1 – 2 hours

Late Afternoon:

Terengganu State Museum: After lunch, you may visit the Terengganu State Museum, which is located 12.7km (23 minutes drive) from the Terengganu Drawbridge. This largest museum in South East Asia is home to many cultural elements subdivided into 9 galleries, and it is worth a visit if you spend a night in Kuala Terengganu (city center). There are ticket entrance of as low as USD 1.40 for adults and this is best place to learn the rich culture of Terengganu.

Evening:

Bukit Puteri: After dinner, take a walk to the top of Bukit Puteri for panoramic views of the Terengganu city and coastline before heading to a local seafood dinner at the nearby restaurant.

Day 2: Explore the Coastal Beaches

Morning:

Pantai Penarik: Drive to Penarik Beach from Kuala Terengganu for about 45 minutes to enjoy the long coastal beaches, filled with homestays, cafes and restaurants. This place is best to visit during May to November. As you drive to the rural villages and scenic ocean drive by the coastal roads, you may encounter some rustic charms of beach cafes that serve coffee and other local pastries. Make your drive early in the morning at 8am to capture the captivating ocean views of the South China Sea and other nearby beaches such as Pantai Bari, Pantai Chalok or Pantai Telaga Papan.

Afternoon:

Pantai Bari: Stop by at Pantai Bari which is another coastal beach on the mainland Terengganu, located along the same beach stretch of Penarik Beach. The quiet atmosphere is well suited if you seek to laze around for an afternoon picnic (if you are driving) and possibly enjoy a quiet seaside break from the crowded Penarik Beach. There are several coffee shops, homestay villas and local restaurants along the stretch if you feel like resting. You can swim at Pantai Bari or head to Chalok Beach which is another 4km away for a more secluded private area.

Evening:

Pantai Chalok: Swim at Chalok Beach in the late afternoon as you enjoy the beautiful sunset at Chalok Beach while having an early BBQ dinner at Katsetiu Villas. This private chic homestay beach villa is highly rated amongst the top tourist attractions in Setiu Terengganu. If you are adventurous, you can do a night stroll along the 5km beach stretch to enjoy the tranquility and sound of waves. You may spot some turtles laying their eggs on Chalok Beach during peak season between May to September especially late nights to the wee hours before sunrise. This beach is the least crowded, underrated and filled with white sandy beaches.

Day 3: Explore the Islands

Morning:

Pulau Perhentian or Redang Island: Get up early at 7am and take a boat ride to the Perhentian Islands or Redang Island. Departing at Merang Jetty located 10 minutes from Katsetiu Villas, you can enjoy a daily snorkelling trip to these islands, a home to world recognized dive sites and sandy white beaches, clear waters and rich marine life. Head to the turtle bay to enjoy friendly turtles on Redang Island where you can swim and feed the turtles.

 Time: 2-3 hours

Afternoon:

Snorkeling or Diving Excursion: Continue your snorkeling trip in either Perhentian or Redang Island (depending on the packages that you choose) until lunch time. Whether you’re a diver or a beachgoer, both Redang Island and Perhentian Island offer plenty of underwater exploration as there are least 5 to 6 diving spots to choose from. For families, enjoy kayaking or paddleboarding near the shallow waters may be a good option to spend your afternoon after a quick lunch (on the boat) or at the nearby islands. You trip will end at 4pm as the boat makes its way back to Merang Jetty from Redang Island or Perhentian which will take an hour to reach the mainland.

Evening:

Beach BBQ Dinner: Enjoy a sunset beach BBQ at one of the island resorts or return to the mainland for a local seafood feast. The choice is yours. Some prefer to spend a night at the island at the resorts before heading back to the mainland. If you want more choices for dinner, head back to the mainland via the last boat at 4pm to Merang Jetty.

Day 3: Explore Hiking & Forest Trails

Morning:

Keluang Hill: Hike to one of Terengganu’s most scenic places with breathtaking views of South China Sea. However, you need to drive 56km (45 minutes) to Bukit Keluang from Setiu District. The hike to the top of Bukit Keluang is approximately 1.5km which will take you 40 minutes to reach the top. Some sections of the trails are steep but assisted by ropes. You may spend few hours hiking to the five levels of cascading waterfalls which form a refreshing natural pool at each juncture. Go for a swim or cooling off after a trek through the surrounding forest.

Chinatown at Setiu:

Chinatown, or Kampung Cina in Kuala Terengganu, is a vibrant neighborhood known for its historic shophouses, colorful street art, and delicious local cuisine. It’s a cultural hub where you can explore traditional Chinese temples, boutique shops, and sample local delicacies, making it a must-visit for food lovers and history enthusiasts.

From Setiu, drive south along Route 3 towards Kuala Terengganu, which takes about 1.5 to 2 hours (approximately 80 km). Once in Kuala Terengganu, follow signs to the city center, and you’ll find Chinatown along Jalan Bandar. It’s best to park nearby and explore the area on foot to fully enjoy the sights and sounds.

Day 4: Relax Before Departure

Morning:

Masjid Tengku Tengah Zaharah (Floating Mosque): Enjoy Terengganu local delicacy nasi dagang at Katsetiu Villas for your breakfast before you head back to Kuala Terengganu. After 45 minutes of driving, you may spend a quiet morning visiting this stunning floating mosque, a serene location for photos and reflection.
